The majority of Heilbronn’s population felt critical towards the new system imposed on them after 30 January 1933. However, in the light of the events following the Reichstag elections on 5 March 1933, many Heilbronners changed sides to support the winners. City councillors were suspended, social democrats and communists were temporarily detained, the “Neckar Echo” social democratic newspaper was expropriated, councillors were beaten and arrested, and Jewish businesses and shops were boycotted on 1 April 1933.
