The City at War

How to protect the city against air raids and what to do in the event of war was discussed as early as 1933. Public and private air raid shelters were built and the basement shelters in the city centre were connected by breaches in walls.

Food was rationed shortly after the outbreak of the war. The local NSDAP organisations handed out the ration cards since the party was now also in charge of non-party members. Paper, metal, clothes, fabrics, shoes and books were collected to alleviate the shortage in material.
